The Way I See It
From my grande cup at Starbucks: The Way I See It #238 Have you noticed that dogs are the new kids? You take a walk with your kid and your dog, but nobody says, “What a cute kid!” Instead they say, “What a cute dog! What’s his name? Is he a rescue?” Maybe if I put a collar and leash on my kid someone will notice her.-- Judy Gruen Humorist and author of The Women’s Daily Irony Supplement. When did small dogs become the latest fashion accessory? Or much worse, when did they become as important to our society as humans? Or is it that their owners just have such a sense of entitlement, that they feel it's ok to bring their pets into public places that other people also enter? I'm only referring to the dog owners that I've seen bring their animals inside Einstein Bagel (where food is served!), Millineum Mall, DSW Shoe Warehouse, and my daughter's after school child care program, to name only a few. Is it too much to ask you to realize that some people, who have just as much right to frequent these places as you, may have allergies to your animal? It should be expected that if you have to visit a public indoor place, you should leave your critter at home.

The Proper Function of a Man
I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time. Jack LondonComments (0) 01.15.2007. 18:49
Subdivide equals Separate
Speaking of documentaries, there is a new one that I can hardly wait to see. Below is a link to its site as well as some verbage I copied over. There is a blog on the site with some great and thought-provoking comments by Kunstler and several others. I highly recommend clicking over. http://www.subdivided.net/ "Subdivided is a documentary film about life in contemporary suburbia: a personal study of isolation and the struggle to find and maintain community in an era of careless development, the uninspired design of the modern subdivision, urban sprawl, and the invasion of the McMansion. American life is more divisive than ever, and poorly designed neighborhoods further encourage isolation and separation. With no sense of place or belonging, is this the new American Dream? The film is written and directed by Dean Terry and features interviews with Andres Duany, James Howard Kunstler and Robert Putnam, with aerial photos by Jim Wark."Comments (1) 01.07.2007. 23:13
Super Size Convenience?
Today I watched Super Size Me. Ugh. Let me just say that I believe in personal responsibility. However I also can't help but believe that if more residents in this country lived in locations where convenience didn't mean a drive-thru window, we wouldn't be a super size nation. Convenience should instead mean how close you live to a beautiful park or recreational area or fresh produce or farmer's market or even quality public transportation. We are such an automobile dependent society, and I believe that this is due to the fashion in which our landscape is being cultivated. It has become impossible to get by with less than one car per adult. It's this setting and these conditions that influence our dining out decisions.Comments (0) 01.07.2007. 22:42
